Singapore is an island, surrounding by waters
clear and clean with some of the nicest beaches
this side of the Asian region. As an island,
we are surrounded by waters of the Indonesian
Straits and some confluences of the Pacific
and Indian Ocean. While we don’t get the mile
high waves that some of the other islands in
other regions of the world, surfing in Singapore
is a reality today. Many nay sayers of old said
that Singapore could not suffice as a surfing
destination and I say this is true. For the
hardcore surfer, Singapore cannot match up geographically
and oceanic ally to some of the walls of water
that Hawaii, Australia and even parts of New
Zealand; just to name a few, can offer to them.
Thrills and spills, wipe outs and breathtaking
moments are not the by word of the water sport
landscape in these islands, but in the end of
the day,
Singapore offers a different perspective on
the sport. Wake boarding and wind surfing are
some of the popular activities that you can
enjoy yourself with in our waters and Sentosa
is one of the prime spots for you to do this.
An island in itself, it was named after the
Malay word that meant ‘tranquil’. Over the years,
the facilities on the island have burgeoned
to the point where families and sports enthusiasts
can do whatever they want, including surfing.
This brings me to the whole point of this article.
Singapore is not a hardcore surfing destination
and does not pretend to be one. It isn’t the
haven of X-games experts, this is the smooth
and svelte user friendly island for the entire
family. Wake boarding, the safe surfing has
really caught on with kids and adults alike.
Rental of wake boards are available at almost
all the major beaches all over Singapore.
You can also do kite surfing and sail surfing,
all you have to do is go to any of the sail
clubs located in Sentosa, Changi and the West
Coast. Getting started is pretty easy and the
learning curve is generous. Many of these places
offer training services and coaching before
you get started so you know you have the guidance
necessary before you decide to go off on your
own. Whether you are behind the boat or riding
the waves on your own, the potential for some
safe and friendly fun is there. If you are looking
to ride your surfboard into the sunset and conquer
the waves, then you would have much better luck
in countries like Indonesia or even Australia
if you have the money. They are relatively nearby
and you will get the challenge you need. If
you are looking for some family fun surfing
or just having a good, sometimes clumsy time
with your friends, then Singapore is the place
for you. If you look around, there are usually
likeminded people splashing about, having some
fun surfing in Singapore
